Our Lady's Choir in Oxford

Choir members with Eric Foster outside Merton College, Oxford
Thirteen members of Our Lady of Lourdes choir from Haslemere spent a wonderful day in Oxford meeting up with their regular organist, Eric Foster, who is the present Junior Organ Scholar at St John’s College.

After 11 am sung Sunday Mass, three cars left Haslemere for Oxford, gathering first in Eric’s rooms before being taken on a tour of the College and seeing all the town’s famous sights. Having studied at Merton many years earlier, one of the group was also able to show off the attractive parts of his old College.

At 6 pm all gathered in St John’s Chapel for Evensong where Eric shared conducting the choir and playing the organ. Here the highlights were the beautiful sung anthem, Harris’s ‘Faire is the Heaven’ and Eric’s final Voluntary, ‘Litanies’ by Alain.

Following sherry with the choir and congregation, everyone adjourned to the magnificent dining hall. A traditional harmonised grace preceded the delicious meal known as a ‘Formal’, and the excellent roast beef and apple pie was much enjoyed.

All agreed it had been a really magical day.
